An Emirati company called Group 42 has launched its first self-driving taxi project on the country’s public streets. The TXAI project, which was unveiled at the Abu Dhabi Smart City Summit, has now completed one of its initial tests on the streets of the emirate, serving 2,730 passengers. The project is being led by a G24 subsidiary called Bayanat, a UAE-based geographic, data analysis and artificial intelligence company.
The general tests of these taxis were carried out on Yas Abu Dhabi Island from November 23 to December 27, 2021, the statement said on Monday. Despite being driverless, a safety officer sits in the driver’s seat during the test phase. “This project is one of the bold steps in applying precision data-based artificial intelligence techniques to the region’s transportation network,” said Fallah al-Ahbabi, head of the Municipalities and Transportation Department.
“We are committed to continuing to work closely with UAE officials to create innovative transportation systems with strategic investment across the Smart Mobility Value Chain,” said the CEO. According to the report, the statement is currently working closely with its partners and UAE officials to launch the second phase of the TXAI program.
Taxi without driver – Rentauto
This phase is scheduled to be launched by mid-2022 and will include 10 driverless taxis in different parts of Abu Dhabi. The fleet consists entirely of electric and hybrid vehicles. The Abu Dhabi Municipalities and Transportation Authority and Bayanat Company joined forces in March last year to develop driverless vehicles. The company has also worked closely with the Emirates Center for Integrated Transportation and Asset Management, Miral, to implement this pilot project.
